These vintage notes have been prepared by Andrew Jefford, Academic Advisor to the Wine Scholar Guild. It has become notable for being priced relatively kindly, having been released en primeur in the aftermath of the Lehman Brothers collapse. Rot became a concern for later ripening Cabernet plots on the Left Bank. The mixed but generally warm, dry summer was ideal for white grapes maturation, and the rain which came at the end of August perfect for unleashing botrytis (though it also provoked some grey rot). James Lawther, 2015 (en primeur). Rating: 2.5/5 Left Bank | 2.5/5 Right Bank. Ordering from the Vintages 2019 Bordeaux Futures Offer will be closed from Monday, November 16th to Tuesday, November 17th while we prepare our second offer of new and previously sold-out products. The early growing cycle of Merlot combined with the very warm weather in March and early April put the right bank at considerable frost risk, but this danger was averted. Slow spread of botrytis required multiple tries. Summary: The class of 2006 was unlucky in having to follow the outstanding crop of 2005 wines, and things were made worse by patchy weather throughout the growing season – including a July drought and a cool August. Powerful, deep-coloured wines with no shortage of (generally well-managed) tannins suggest this may be one of the region’s longer-lived vintages. A warm and even summer following good weather during flowering with lots of sunshine. Aromatic, concentrated whites. Powerful, full wines at best, though atypical & controversial. The 2014 season was by no means trouble-free in Sauternes. March and early April saw a combination of warm days and cool nights, then the rest of April and May were very warm and dry, leading to a rapid and precocious flowering. The best vintages of Château Latour are among the longest-lived wines in the world. The mid-September rains initiated the process, but it wasn’t until the rains of September 30th and October 10th that noble rot could proliferate, and superb quality fruit was picked between October 17th and 25th, with further tries continuing into November. There is no systematic left bank/right bank differentiation in this vintage, though differences between individual properties can be marked. Flowering went well, though the fruit set was modest rather than generous; the vines withstood the midsummer heat well. Require further time in bottle to reveal themselves. Inevitably, some critics were pleasantly surprised with the results and rigorous selection at top estates – presumably at significant extra cost – led to several successes, said primeur tasters Steven Spurrier, James Lawther MW and Jeannie Cho Lee MW. The four episodes of autumn rain proved particularly beneficial for Sauternes as this initiated the development of botrytis much earlier than usual. Jane Anson awarded four 100-point scores after re-tasting 67 of the top estates. This was a relatively light vintage and the most successful producers emphasised fruit over power. There are plenty of good options at Cru Bourgeois level in this vintage. Top wines have lovely fruit structure, real definition and excellent balance, but the warning is for consistency. At its best, concentrated, structured wines which have aged well, though initially in shadow of 2000. Exceptionally dry year from winter to autumn. Deeply colored reds, low acidities & high tannin deviate from classic Left Bank profile. Very low yields. Summary: The ripe middle vintage of what would become a holy trinity – 2005, 2009 and 2010. This … St Emilion inconsistent although the best wines are very good; Pomerol is more consistent. Which Wine goes well with food, dish, meal, recipe ? Classic reds with color and structure. Clay soils performed best. Those three appellations, that had the best of the glorious late Autumn weather and most crucially suffered less from rain in August and October. This poor weather negatively influenced the early Merlots. Some sites suffered water stress. A dry, warm autumn gave way, in January, to a prodigiously wet though mild winter (including the wettest month of January since 1920) and a cool March. Leading properties in St Estèphe, Pauillac and St Julien have made the best red wines of the Médoc: fresh, but balanced and structured, too, like a cross between 2014 and 2015. Very high sugars &  clean, opulent wines with optimal noble rot. Wines have power and ageing potential, but lack some of the seductive charm of the 2015s. We’re always obsessing over the latest (and oldest) vintages, and we want to share that knowledge and passion with our readers. Fortunately, four separate storms in August brought the vines some relief, and an early white-wine harvest began on August 24, After a warm and unusually wet winter, spring began with very mild March temperatures, and budburst was two weeks ahead of average. April and May were chaotic, but the weather during flowering in early June turned propitious. And to that end, our Bordeaux 2019 Primeurs (futures) content thus far includes an in-depth 6,000-word article “France, Bordeaux: 2019 En Primeur Report – The Miracle Vintage” by Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, our Bordeaux reviewer and editor-in-chief, published in the June 2020 Week 3 issue. Some Merlot-dominated St Emilion wines are high in alcohol (Tertre-Roteboeuf is 16.2% this year). Rating: 4.5/5 on the Left Bank | 5/5 on the Right Bank. Complete, fleshy reds, rich in color & phenolic content. Irregular reds, at best elegant, lighter weight with lower alcohol for mid-term cellaring. Back vintages of comparable quality at similar or lower prices, already physical and easily available, confused the scene and challenged the assumption that En Primeur is the best time to buy. Pomerol stands out. The dry white wines of Pessac-Léognan, by contrast, are impressive. Here are six Bordeaux 2013 wines that may surprise you, chosen by John Stimpfig in 2015. After considerable anxiety about disease pressure during the long and colossally wet spring, spirits lifted on the Right Bank during June as summer warmth arrived and the rain clouds cleared. Which wine choosing, serving and drinking ? Ideal October: brief rainstorms, elevated temperatures, windy & sun-filled afternoons. Summary: This vintage met all the conditions for a great year and has gone down as a triumph for many, which means it is well worth considering smaller-scale estates alongside the top names. Small berries, higher anthocyanin content than 2009/2005. Acidities are sometimes low but the wines are lush, fruity and sensual, and should make an attractive mid-term ageing prospect. Vintage summaries compiled by Chris Mercer. Other reds were irregular in maturity. Bordeaux 2010 is a powerful vintage with high tannin and acidity, although alcohols were considered controversially high in some cases. Extremely dry from mid-July, then rain in Médoc 24-26 September, with more rain in October. A year of extremes with a very wet winter and spring, very damaging hail in some areas, severe down mildew threats in most. Harvesting unfolded at a leisurely pace, and the result is in general a magnficent crop of amply dimensioned yet highly focussed wines. Well-balanced wines; the best have prominent noble rot. Vibrating sorting tables make appearance at top estates. Budburst was late and flowering was late and uneven; heavy storms hit Bordeaux in early June, and there was continual disease pressure. Little sorting was required. By no means a bad vintage for whites, but most certainly better for reds. Look out for Pomerol and St-Emilion estates with high levels of Cabernet Franc, which did comparatively well. Very well-balanced, aromatic whites benefitted from cooler weather. Only those with sufficient substance will gain with cellaring. Challenging season: A wet April disrupted flowering; coulure and mildew reduced the Merlot crop. Northern Médoc communes stand out as successes on the Left Bank. The wines will in general age very well.
